Ultra Precision Structured Surfaces (UPS2 ) continues to develop its world leading offering of diamond turned functional optical surface masters for a diverse range of industries.
Since its inception 5 years ago as part of a Cranfield University led IKC project, UPS2 has been manufacturing commercial ultra precision production masters for next generation tablet displays, concentrated solar PV and advanced lighting systems. The combination of optical quality nanometric finishes, micron level geometric pattern fidelity and seamless masters at the meter scale continues to find a surprising range of applications from banknotes to spacecraft.
UPS2 has successfully applied the ultra precision engineering expertise of Cranfield University to deliver new capabilities in structured surface mastering. The next link in this advanced manufacturing chain is now being re-engineered by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Ultra Precision. The current capabilities of reel-to-reel processing systems is not sufficiently developed to take full advantage of the improved ultra-precision masters on offer i.e. larger masters, higher accuracy and better pattern fidelity, improved registration and finer alignment and high throughput without compromised precision. These are all being developed within the EPSRC Centre on a new reel-to-reel platform. This platform will deliver new functionality and new levels of accuracy on both passive and active films in products of the future.
