The Centre’s educational programme Watch it Made, recently welcomed local schools to undertake the Watch it Made experience at Cranfield University.
Throughout the sessions, the children gained hands on practical experience in operating a lathe and engraver and seeing how their chosen watch faces were printed using UV ink jet printing. They assembled their manufactured watch parts with pre-supplied components (movement, hands, crown and stem, watch glass and strap) and went home with their own personalised timepiece.
Schools who have undertaken the experiences so far include Samuel Whitbread Academy, Arnold Academy and Goldington Academy.
Watch it Made is an educational outreach programme funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The idea was conceived by Cranfield University staff who wished to create an engineering activity that would make young learners experience the unique “pride of producing” that only engineering can offer, and to enthuse children into science, technology, engineering and mathematical subjects prior to their GCSE subject selections.
