Laser FIB: Industrial Applications
Thursday 23 June 2016 at the Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, UK
The laser assisted focused ion beam (laser FIB) platform has been developed by the EPSRC Centre in Ultra Precision to enable ultra precision featuring in the 10’s of nanometre range, over relatively large substrates, over the 10’s of millimetre scales. This will enable new economies of scale for products that currently have struggled to progress beyond academia or small scale manufacturing. Additionally it will enable new products to be developed that current production technology is unable to manufacture.
This one day networking event organised by the EPSRC Centre in Ultra Precision and hosted by the Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge, will examine the existing industrial and medical applications this new platform will address for both manufacturing scale-up and look to new innovations that will now be possible utilising the unique hybrid processing machine.
This event should appeal to industrialists who are struggling to realise their product aspirations due to existing machine technology limitations and those looking for new product application ideas that might have seemed impossible to realise cost effectively only 12 months ago.
A facilities tour will be available to participants during the extended lunch session, subject to availability.
Confirmed speakers:
- Increasing the productivity of ultra precision machining through FIB/Laser hybrid processing
Prof Bill O’Neill, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge - Micro and nanostructuring mechanical and optical devices by focused ion beam
Prof Xichun Luo, University of Strathclyde - Gallium and inert-gas FIB methods for superconducting, nanomechanical and plasmonic devices
Prof Paul Warburton, University College London - FIB fabrication for metamaterials
Dr Xu Fang, University of Southampton - Large volume 3D characterization and micromachining using a plasma FIB DualBeam
Dr Rene Dobbe, FEI - Multi-scale high precision machining with ion beams
Dr Fabián Pérez-Willard, Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH - Focused ion beams for industry
Dr Saurav Goel, University of Cambridge
